DAY 1 : Marrakech – High Atlas –Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
At 8:00am we will pick you up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech, drive through the High Atlas Mountains, stopping to enjoy the panoramic views from Tizi-n-Tichka.
We will then visit an Argan oil cooperative to learn about the interesting production process and the many benefits that this oil has for the body.
Continuing south, we will take a 6 km/4 mile side trip to visit the ancient Ait Benhaddou Ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At this spectacular location, several movies such as Gladiator, Obelix, Jewel of the Nile, and Sahara with Penelope Cruz, have been filmed.
We will have lunch in the village before continuing our journey to Ouarzazate, known as the great door to the desert and the starting point of many expeditions..
After, we will drive through the great palm groves of Skoura and Boumalne to the Valley of the Roses before having dinner and staying overnight at the Dades Gorge.
DAY 2 : Dades Valley - Todra Gorge – Merzouga Dunes
After breakfast we will drive through the mountain valley seeing many different and beautiful Kasbahs along the way. Enjoying several stops as we drive south, we will then reach one of the most amazing sites in the south: the Todra Gorge. The river running through the Todra Gorge has formed enormous vertical walls creating a uniquely beautiful paradise for many people, including climbers, to enjoy.
We will enjoy some lunch there before continuing to the desert and the impressive Merzouga dunes where we will rest for a while and enjoy some tea and entertainment.
As you will not require your luggage, we will store it at the hotel, before leaving on a camel caravan to ride to the Haimas camp. Along the way we will stop so you can stretch your legs and enjoy the spectacular sunset over the dunes. Before dinner you will have an opportunity to climb the dunes, drink some tea and enjoy the peace and quiet. We will stay overnight at the Bedouin tent, under a spectacular canopy of stars.
DAY 3 : Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Nomads - Merzouga
We will awake before dawn to watch the sunrise over the great dunes before riding the camels back to the hotel. After breakfast, we will drive through the sandy desert along the some of the same tour as the former Paris-Dakar Rally, with the Algerian border in the background. We will be surrounded by the Erg Chebbi dunes, the highest in Morocco, reaching the incredible height of 220 meters/820 feet.
We will also take time to stop at a very good vantage point to appreciate the spectacular views of the grand Erg Chebbi as a whole. Shortly afterwards we will arrive at the village of Khamlia, inhabited by people originally from Mali and the Sudan, where we will relax and drink tea while watching a show of spiritual Gnawa music.
After we will return to the hotel where will have time to climb the dunes and fully enjoy the sunset. Before dinner, we can chat with the Berbers of the hotel to learn more about their life and customs, enhancing your connection with the world of the desert.
We will enjoy dinner with a show of Berber music with drums and castanets. We will stay the night at the hotel.
DAY 4 : Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – Draa Valley - Zagora
After a shower and breakfast we will leave the desert behind and continue on to Rissani. We will visit the most important market in the south, where the majority of desert nomads make their purchases.
We will then drive across the interesting and arid, desert-like, landscape of the Draa Valley, making several stops along the way, taking our time to enjoy the valley and the river running through it. This river, bearing the same name as the valley, is the longest river in Morocco and runs all the way through to Mauritania.
Then we will reach Zagora, an administrative centre, where caravans once departed on a long 52 day journey to Timbuktu. Zagora, with its Oasis of the same name, overlooks the Draa Valley. The Zagora Oasis is the largest in Morocco and is known for its date production. Here we will stay for dinner and the night.
DAY 5 : Zagora - Anti Atlas - Ouarzazate - Marrakech
After our breakfast and before leaving, we will see the famous sign showing the 52 day trip to Timbuktu, the important commercial centre of Mali. We will then drive through the Anti Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate where we will visit the Taourirt Kasbah and Atlas Film Studios.
After we will drive back to Marrakech through Tizi-n-Tichka and enjoy lunch at a restaurant in the mountains.
Upon arrive in Marrakech, we will drive you back to your hotel or riad where our services will end. Morocco Desert Trek driver will drop you off at your hotel. End of Marrakech desert tour.
